FORT LEWIS, Wash. — A soldier in a Fort Lewis-based Stryker brigade was killed in Iraq when his unit came under small arms enemy fire, the Department of Defense said May 28.
Spc. Mathew P. LaForest, 21, of Austin, Texas, died May 25 during combat operations in Taji, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to C Company, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, a Stryker combat team.
Sixteen soldiers based at Fort Lewis have died in May, making it the deadliest month of the Iraq war for troops from this Army post south of Tacoma.

For some reason out of the blue I thought of you today. I miss you bud. The neighborhood looks the same witht the exception of our paintball field (which is now an HEB). Thank you for your sacrifice, even if I would rather have you back in Austin. Heaven gained a hero and we lost an angel, or is it the other way around. I think you get my point ;).

So sorry to here of Matthew, he must have been one hell of a soldier and even a better son. Never knew him but I am sure we were related in some manner, my thoughts prayers and best wishes go out to the whole family.
