Army sergeant from Phoenix dies of wounds suffered in Iraq

PHOENIX — A 22-year-old soldier from Phoenix who decided to join the Army after the 2001 terrorist attacks has died of injuries suffered in Iraq last week.

Sgt. Tyler Prewitt, a field medic, was wounded Sept. 24 when a rocket-propelled grenade struck the vehicle he was riding in, his family and the Department of Defense said.

Surgeons operated on Prewitt in Iraq, and he was taken to a hospital in Germany, where he was pronounced brain dead Sept. 28, his family said.

Tim Prewitt said his son’s organs were donated to other patients in Germany.

Tyler Prewitt grew up in northwest Phoenix, attended elementary school at Northwest Community Christian School and graduated from Greenway High School in 2001.
