AUSTIN, Texas — An Army sergeant from Austin died in Iraq when the tire on a military truck exploded as he tried to change it. Henry Ybarra III was 32.
His father, Hank Ybarra said he received a call Thursday on his cell phone and learned of his son’s death as he was observing a moment of silence for the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
“All I know is my son is gone,” Ybarra said in a story for the Austin-American Statesman. “I can’t believe it, why it happened at this time.”
Henry Ybarra left behind a wife and three young children, the youngest a little boy. He was in the 6th Cavalry, D Troop.

Dear Ybarra Family,
I would personally like to show you my appreciation for Henry Ybarra III’s dedication to serving our great country and to have the courage to stand up for people and proudly serve.
I’m a cadet at James Bowie High School and have been interested in serving our country in the U.S. Army. By hearing about Sgt.Ybarra’s story it shows me that people will fight for and stand up for what they believe in. His life is a big price to pay but it is greatly appreciated by me and my family. I wanted to show my appreciation and thank you from the bottom of my heart. You and Sgt. Ybarra are paying the highest price imaginable for me and my family to be able to enjoy the freedom’s our country has to offer and while I can never pay you back I felt it important to tell you how I felt and to let you know that there is someone out there who does appreciate the sacrafices you must be facing everyday.
My prayers go out for you and your family and escpecially to Sgt Ybarra's children who will not be able to grow up knowing a great man.
