ROGERS, Ark. — The Defense Department has announced that a Marine from Rogers was killed in a combat operation in Afghanistan.

Family members say Cpl. Kyle W. Wilks was on a convoy when his vehicle was struck April 15 by a roadside bomb in Kandahar province. The family says a military report says Wilks was killed instantly.

The 24-year-old Wilks was the son of Randall and Kathy Wilks and was a 2002 graduate of Rogers High School.

Wilks’ uncle, Steve Wilks, says his nephew had to stay behind because of a health problem when his Marine Corps unit first shipped out for a tour in Iraq. Kyle Wilks later found out that the soldier who went in his place was...

I met the Wilks family at a hard time in my life. Kyle always had a way of making you smile when you were about to cry. He always had the warmest hug that just poured love straight into your heart from his. He will be truly missed and to Kathy and Randy and Makay...you were so blessed with a wonderful son and brother and he was equally blessed with such an awesome family who always supported and love him fully!
