BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The war years have run together for Brenda Murkerson, mother of Marine Gunnery Sgt. Jerome Murkerson.

Was it 2003 when her son first went to Iraq, or 2004? And what was the date he returned in 2005 for his second combat tour?

She remembers Aug. 23, 2007, the date he left for his third trip to Iraq. And she will never forget Oct. 1, the day he died in combat near Baghdad.

This man was and is a hero in the eyes of my family! He loved being a marine, but more than that Jerome loved his family. Wendi you and the kids are in our prayers. Jerome was a great man, a great friend, a great son, a great husband, a great father, a great grandson, a great nephew, a great marine. The gates of Heaven are now patroled by a great soul. I feel his presents daily, Jerome truly touched my life and the life of my faimly, I will teach my grandchildren of the great man who faught for their freedom, and the price his paid........
