Redding-area Marine killed in Afghanistan

The Associated Press

PALO CEDRO, Calif. — In a call to his mother last week, Marine Cpl. Travis Woods said he would be coming home soon from Afghanistan.

“He said, ‘Mom, we have a little more work to do,’ ” said his mother, Stacey Woods.

Instead, three Marines knocked on her door over the weekend to tell her that her son had died. He was 21.

Woods, who had already completed a tour of duty in Iraq before he went to Afghanistan, was killed Sept. 9 while fighting in Helmand province, according to the Department of Defense. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Pendleton.

My son was a Marine friend of Travis, they were together in Afghanistan, and was one of the Marines at his funeral. He spoke very highly of him. My thoughts and Prayers are with family and friends of Travis, on this day and everyday. With much love as a fellow Marine Mom, know God is with you now and always.

First off, I want to say how sorry I was to hear of this Marine's passing. Noone can know the grief his parents and family must feel. I was the lead car in his funeral procession from the Redding Airport to Mt. Shasta. I have some photos of that should his parents want them (CHPRedding). God Bless. Sean
