OKLAHOMA CITY — A soldier with Oklahoma ties who enjoyed sports and was devoted to the Army died in an explosion in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense confirmed on Monday.
Sgt. 1st Class Jeffrey D. Kettle, 31, of Madill, and two others were killed Sunday when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle in Nangarhar Province, Defense Department officials said.
Also killed were Sgt. Charles B. Kitowski III, 31, of Farmers Branch, Texas, and Staff Sgt. Jesse G. Clowers Jr., 27, of Herndon, Va.

I was on the plane to RDU yesterday with SFC Kettle's parents. The stewards paid honor to this fallen soldier and his parents, by recognizing their presence on the plane and requesting that they be allowed to exit the plane first upon landing. I turned to the lady next to me and said that I wish they had asked us to keep our seats. My faith in humanity (which was flagging after a long day of travel) was restored when upon landing, NO ONE MOVED. I was in tears when no one moved and allowed this grieving couple to leave to a round of applause. I was so proud to be an American. If Mr. and Mrs Kettle read this, please know I will think of you often.
