
SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The Pentagon has confirmed the death of a 22-year-old Macomb County soldier who was in a vehicle that hit a roadside bomb in Iraq. Another soldier died in the blast.
Pvt. Mark A. Barbret of Shelby Township, north of Detroit, was killed Thursday when the vehicle he was riding in hit a bomb near Ramadi, Iraq, the Defense Department said in a news release.
Barbret was a member of the Army’s 44th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division. Family members were notified of Barbret’s death Friday.
Barbret and Nicole Hale had a 3-year-old son, Christian.
The Army mechanic attended Utica Eisenhower High School. He served a year in Korea before his unit was transferred to Iraq about six weeks ago, said his father, Kim Barbret.
