AUDUBON, N.J. — A 31-year-old soldier from New Jersey who was based in New York was killed in Iraq after an improvised explosive device detonated near him while he was on foot patrol, military officials said May 31.

Staff Sgt. Joseph M. Weiglein, of Audubon, died May 29 in Ilbu Falris, Iraq.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), in Fort Drum, N.Y.

My thoughts and prayers go out to SSG Weiglein's family. I worked with SSG Weiglein during his recruiting assignment in Kingsport, TN. He was a great soldier and always had a smile on his face. SSG Weiglein will never be forgotten!
