RAEFORD, N.C. — A 21-year-old soldier from North Carolina was killed while serving in Iraq, the Department of Defense announced Tuesday.
Spc. Montrel S. Mcarn, 21, of Raeford, died Monday when his unit came under attack in Baghdad. Also killed in the attack was Sgt. Pedro J. Colon, 25, of Cicero, Ill, the Pentagon said in a statement.
Both men were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment based at Fort Hood, Texas. They deployed to Iraq in November.
A friend of the Mcarn family declined comment on behalf of the family when contacted Tuesday by The Fayetteville Observer, saying relatives were distraught over the death.
