Service set for first Montana soldier killed in Iraq

BIGFORK, Mont. — Funeral services were scheduled for Jan. 2 for Army 1st Lt. Edward Matthew Saltz of Bigfork, the first Montana soldier to die in the Iraq war.

The service will be at 1 p.m. in the Bigfork High School gymnasium. The Rev. Jan Whitman will officiate.

Burial with full military honors will follow at the Bigfork Community Cemetery.

Saltz, 27, was killed when a roadside bomb detonated near his Humvee on Dec. 22 in Baghdad. Another soldier who served with Saltz in the 1st Armored Division, plus an Iraqi translator, also died, and two other soldiers were wounded.
