RICHMOND, Va. — A former ROTC instructor at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington was killed in Afghanistan, according to officials at VMI and the Department of Defense.
Killed in action April 15 was 35-year-old Marine 1st Sgt. Luke Mercardante of Athens, Ga. He was acting sergeant major for Combat Logistics Battalion 24 of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
Mercardante was on the staff of the VMI Naval ROTC unit from 2002 to 2005. He helped train cadets preparing to be commissioned as officers in the Marine Corps.

To all that loved Luke, our condolences. Our cousin, Kyle W. Wilks was the other soldier that was killed by the IED that took Luke's life that horrible night. Our hearts broke for our beloved Kyle and we share in your loss of Luke as well. We will keep Luke's family and friends in our thoughts and prayers.
