
ELMHURST, Ill. — A 22-year-old soldier from this Chicago suburb died in Iraq during his third tour of duty, his family said.
Army Sgt. Joe Vanek was killed by small-arms fire in Baghdad, his father, Frank Vanek, told the Chicago Tribune. The 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, N.C., confirmed Nov. 13 that Vanek died Nov. 12.
He served with the division’s 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team.
