Associated Press

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A man from Knoxville was among two soldiers killed last month in Iraq, the Department of Defense announced Monday.

Army Sgt. Eric A. Fifer, 22, was injured and died Sept. 7 when the patrol he was on was attacked in Haqlaniyah, Iraq.

Pfc. Nicholas J. Greer, 21, of Monroe, Mich., also was killed.

Both soldiers were assigned to the Army’s 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C.

Officials did not release any other information.

Fifer is the fourth East Tennessee soldier to die in Iraq since August.

Two members of the Tennessee National Guard 278th Regimental Combat Team died Aug. 22 when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle. And an Army specialist out of Fort Stewart, Ga., was killed on Sept. 6 when his vehicle rolled into a ditch.
