FRANKFORT, Ky. — On the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Kentucky National Guard announced the death yesterday of one of its soldiers in Iraq.
Pvt. 1st Class Sammie E. Phillips, 19, of Vine Grove was killed Monday when his vehicle overturned while conducting a traffic-control mission on a highway near Rustamiyah, Iraq, officials said.
Two other Kentucky Guardsmen were injured, the Guard said. They were not identified.

Sammie, i can remember all the times we spent together. You, me, cassie, adam, tony...all of us. Your memories still love on in my heart. Although it is hard to cope with this loss of you being gone, i am rejoicing that you no longer have to be here in the troubles of this world. You are truly a hero. You always have been in my eyes and now the rest of America can see it. Your smile has left an imprint on my heart. I am completely devestated at your loss. You grew up to be a fine young man and have wonderful parents who are so proud of you and your country is too. You gave the greatest sacrifice for our country..your life.
