Funeral set for Fort Wainwright soldier

BURLINGTON FLATS, N.Y. — Funeral services are planned Tuesday for a Fort Wainwright soldier who was killed in Iraq a week ago.

Army Cpl. Michael Mayne of Burlington Flats in upstate New York and two other Fort Wainwright soldiers were killed Feb. 23 in action outside Baghdad.

The Department of Defense says the three died of wounds suffered in Balad when insurgents attacked their unit using small arms fire.

Friends say Mayne was due to return from Iraq in May.

His casket arrived Sunday at the Syracuse airport and was escorted to his hometown by fellow soldiers, law enforcement officers and others.
