Soldier killed in Iraq buried in western Kentucky hometown

BENTON, Ky. — A Benton native who was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq was buried March 21 in Marshall County, his boyhood home.

Staff Sgt. Joey Dunigan, 37, of Fort Riley, Kan., was buried at the cemetery of Hamlet Baptist Church. Services for Dunigan were held at Collier Funeral Home.

Dunigan was killed March 11 along with another soldier by a homemade bomb in Fallujah when their vehicle was hit by an improved explosive device, according to the Pentagon.

He was a member of the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, based at Fort Riley. Dunigan joined the Army after graduating from Marshall County High School in 1984 and had also served in Germany and Korea.
